Topics

As heat and moisture are at the core of most building science issues, day one will investigate the basics of heat and moisture, how they are stored and how they interact with materials. The fundamental reasoning behind standard tests for moisture and heat flow (R-value) tests will be discussed and critiqued. Finally, modeling of heat and moisture flow will be examined, with a presentation of some of the possibilities, limitations, and challenges. This will be the basis of Day 1 with Dr. John Straube.

On day 2, Dr. Joe Lstiburek will discuss how airflow in buildings is a complex flow and pressure distribution problem that leads to three-dimensional airflow networks that interact with building mechanical systems. This has profound impacts on building durability, smoke and fire control, indoor air quality, comfort and operating costs. This advanced class deals with state-of-the-art understanding, design, control, diagnostics and repair.
